The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has published his Opinion on the EU legislators’ proposed Regulation on transparency and targeting for political advertising. In his Opinion, Wojciech Wiewiórowski expressed appreciation for the aim and the objective of the draft Regulation which seeks to promote free and fair elections in the EU, therefore strengthening the EU’s democratic process. However, the EDPS also recommended considering more stern rules in regard to online targeted advertising for political purposes and to make such advertising more transparent.
